The most romantic time of year is coming in less than a week! But for me, it will be known as "Single Awareness Day". Hooray!
As much as I think it would be wonderful to be in a relationship, I am enjoying the single life pleasantly. It's a nice feeling to be independent, and you don't need to be with a man in order to feel confident! Let's be honest, there are some big pros to being single. 1) Free time. 2) No heartbreak or jealously. 3) More time spent with family and friends. and of course, 4) No having to share food!
But just because I'm a single lady won't stop me from enjoying the romantic spirit of this holiday. So in honor of the upcoming day of Cupid, I want to share some of my favorite movies on romance that you can enjoy whether you're celebrating with your Valentine or if you're celebrating "Single Awareness Day"! (WARNING: Some spoilers if you haven't seen the movies.)
1.) The Proposal (2009)
Best Quote: “Do you prefer being called Margaret or Satan’s Mistress? We’ve heard it both ways!”
Romantic comedies are my most favorite types of movies. In my opinion, this is the absolute greatest romantic comedy of all time. It's also my number one favorite movie in general. The cast is wonderful (Betty White is a boss), the storyline is brilliant, and it's just adorably hilarious. I can quote almost every line!
2.) Dirty Dancing (1987)
Best Quote: “Nobody puts Baby in the corner.”
Dancing and romance? Heck, yes! This movie is a classic, and it was made in the 1980's which makes it even more special (I love the 80's). The music and dancing in this movie is amazing, and let's not forget about how dreamy Patrick Swayze is ...
3.) What If (2014)
Best Quote: “In fairy tales, love inspires you to be noble and courageous, but in real life, love is just an all-purpose excuse for selfish behavior. You can lie and cheat and hurt people, and it's all okay because you're in love.”
I think this movie is brilliant and adorable, not just because Daniel Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan are both in it. It's an independent movie that shows how being "friend-zoned" can have benefits, and I think it's a great lesson proving how meaningful it can be to be friends before jumping right into a relationship. It's very whimsical, just like a modern version of When Harry Met Sally or a happier (500) Days of Summer.
4.) Crazy, Stupid Love (2011)
Best Quote: "I will never stop trying. Because when you find the one ... you never give up."
No doubt that is one of the best romantic comedies of all time. The cast is absolutely perfect. It has the hilarious and quirky Steve Carell, Julianne Moore, Kevin Bacon, Marisa Tomei, and of course Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling's wonderful chemistry. This film seems to have all different messages about love, that it may not always work out but it should never allow you to give up.
5.) Pretty in Pink (1986)
Best Quote: "It's called a sense of humor - you should get one - they're nice."
What's more heartwarming than a 80's high school romance film? This movie was made by the same people who created teen classics such as The Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles. Molly Ringwald is one of my favorite actresses, so I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is also a fan of hers. This is also a good movie if you love Jon Cryer, who plays Duckie, it's one of his best roles ever. Plus, the movie involves the color pink, my favorite color!
6.) Cinderella (2015)
Best Quote: "Have courage and be kind."
A live-action remake of Disney's 1950 animated classic, this movie is so lovely in many ways. I absolutely love how stunning and elegant Lily James in the iconic ballgown and glass slippers, the transformation and ballroom entrance scenes always give me chills. It makes me want to be a princess! (Although dancing in glass shoes sounds very dangerous ...) What makes the movie even more lovely is Cinderella's chemistry with Prince Charming, it's almost more beautiful than the original version!
7.) Grease (1978)
Best Quote: "Tell me about it, stud."
Do I really need to "tell you more" about this option? This movie is a straight-up classic, and one of my favorite musicals of all time. I love the costumes, the music, the acting, what's there not to love? Sandy would be one of my dreams roles to play in show, I would love to sing and dance "You're The One That I Want" and "Summer Nights". I also love the latest live show they did on TV just recently, it was almost just as perfect as the original!
8.) Beauty and the Beast (1991)
Best Quote: "Do not be deceived by appearance. For beauty is found within."
No fairytale is better than the tale as old as time. It's one of my all-time favorite Disney movies, mainly because it teaches us that true beauty comes outside, no matter what you look like on the outside. This movie is so beautiful and enchanted. I'm even more excited because Disney is making a live-action remake starring Emma Watson as Belle along with an amazing cast! It comes out in about a year from now, and I'm already counting down to the day!
9.) Sixteen Candles (1984)
Best Quote: "When you do find the right guy, don't let him boss you around."
Yet again, we have another romantic classic from the 80's! This is one of Molly Ringwald's other popular movies, her first one actually. A coming-of-age comedy based on a girl whose entire family forgets her sixteenth birthday and is embarrassed when she accidentally reveals she wants to save her virginity for her crush, Jake Ryan. But luckily, her embarrassment and sorrow leads to a good ending! (Sorry, spoiler alert. Whoops ...)
10.) (500) Days of Summer (2009)
Best Quote: "People change. Feelings change. It doesn't mean that the love once shared wasn't true and real. It simply just means that sometimes when people grow, they grow apart."
You may or may not like this movie, which is why it's the bottom of my top ten suggestions of this list. I'm sort of in between, but I still think it's a great romantic comedy to appreciate. I love how Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt play each other's love interests, they are so cute! It makes me wish they were a real-life couple!
