Anyone on spring break or about to go on spring break yet? I just finished mine two days ago, it sucks. I love being back at college with all of my friends, but I really miss vacation and having more time to myself. But now that I just got back from New York City and have learned a few tips for going there as a vacation destination, this week's top ten list is based on my advice for anyone who is considering vacationing in the Big Apple!
1.) Bring Comfortable Shoes
New York is one of the world's biggest cities, so you will be walking a lot. My mom and I made the mistake of packing only two pairs of footwear, and they were our nice pairs. Even though wearing my Lauren Conrad boots and my black Elsie suede pumps made me feel super fashionable walking in one of the fashion capitals of the world, my feet were pretty much done with walking after the first full day. So definitely pack shoes that won't make your feet plead for rest stops every ten minutes.
2.) Plan A Budget
A trip to the Big Apple can be pretty pricey for many reasons. But other than pricey hotels and flights, the city is surprisingly an attractive destination for budget travelers with some help on little advance planning and smart spending. Make sure you save up on cash (for shopping and sight-seeing), plan out what activities you want to see and do before getting there, and look online for the best deals. If you want a recommendation for help, my mom and I managed to save some money by purchasing a City Pass which allows access to some of the main attractions of NYC!
3.) Take The Yellow Taxi Cabs ONLY
Just remember that if the car is not marked, it may not be safe. People who drive those cars may be trying to trick you into thinking they are a Uber or taxi driver. If it's yellow and marked, you should be safe to enter!
4.) Plan Activities/Tourism Ahead Of Time
Like I said in #2, it's a good idea to plan out what you want to see and do before you arrive and decide from there. Planning ahead of time can help you save deals and tour on the days that work best for you. Also, don't forget to check out City Pass and get even better deals!
5.) Make Dinner Reservations
New York is a very busy city, which means restaurants can be especially busy. It's a smart idea to look up the best and least expensive restaurants that you can get early reservations for and that are, most importantly, delicious. My top recommendation for a great recommendation, the Little Owl! Check out one of my recent food blogs, New "Fork" City , for more details.
6.) Don't Wear Bags That Are Noticable
Of course you need a bag to travel and keep your belongings in, but New York is known for thieves and pick-pocketers. The best way to keep your bag safe is to use a crossbody shoulder bag and wear your coat/jacket over it, that way it will make it harder for anyone to see your bag.
7.) Bring A Buddy
Unless you are traveling for business, don't go alone. When you have someone traveling with you, it's easy to feel more safe and less scary to walk around the big city. Everything that has to do with the trip will be more expensive, and being alone in the city can be pretty dangerous at times. I know if my mom weren't with me, I would not be able to survive in the big city by myself. Besides, traveling with a friend or family member makes the trip more fun and exciting!
8.) Charge Camera Fully
NYC is a very photogenic city with so many cool places to take pictures. But you won't be able to take cool pictures without a full battery and a charger!
9.) Climb Either Empire State Building or Top of the Rock
There are so many great attractions I could list as recommendations to visit, but I mainly want to point out climbing the Empire State Building or the Top of the Rock. You get the coolest views of the city, both day and night! Although if you have a serious fear of heights, it may not be the best idea. Unless you want to conquer your fears!
10.) Have Fun and Enjoy!
New York City, in my opinion, is one of the coolest cities I have ever visited, and I am already desperate to go back! It is a trip that goes by fast, especially if you're there for three days and three nights only. Do as much tourism and exploring as you can, and just remember to enjoy and embrace every second while you are there!
