Hey, y’all! Happy Almost Friday!
A few weeks ago, I finally finished putting up with the common cold that lasted for two whole weeks. To be honest, I’ve been expecting it to come at some point during the winter (I live in the freaking Midwest, how could you not expect it?!) There’s nothing pretty about sore throats, nasal congestion, nonstop coughing, having to blow your nose 24/7, and not being able to smell or taste anything. Everything about it is so purely gross. I cannot be the only person in the world to admit that.
Thankfully (and obviously), I feel much better now. It would have been a dreadful few weeks without NyQuil, DayQuil, Ibuprofen, cough drops, and of course, some handy dandy tissues! However, there are some remedies that I do on a normal occasion and that I have done while putting up with my cold. They are super helpful and beneficial, even though they’re usually a part of my normal routine! Here are a few of my favorite common cold remedies:
Water is SO important for the body, no matter if you’re sick or not sick! I honestly don’t understand how people hate drinking water, it tastes so good and is so satisfying! I’m obsessed with water, and I try to drink at least four full glasses per day. It’s the first thing I drink when I wake up, I need my H2O before I can have my coffee! I know what you’re thinking, that I probably pee too much because of this … and you’re right. But at least drinking water is healthy!
Hot baths and showers
I love bathing myself in hot water, especially when I’m feeling under the weather. It soothes my whole body, and it gives a sense of relief for sinuses. It’s a perfect way to cleanse the body as well as comfort yourself. I get easily relaxed in a hot bath or shower, it’s like a meditation for me in a way!
Hot, delicious soup
Catching the cold is a perfect excuse to have chicken noodle soup and tomato soup! Either one sounds good to me 😋
Drinking warm fluids
Like I said before, hotness feels so good when you’re sick! Warm liquids feel so good, especially when you’re dealing with a sore, itchy throat. I would recommend drinking tea, but I’m not big of a fan of tea. But if you love it, then you should definitely drink it! Coffee, hot water, hot chocolate, hot apple cider, and any other warm beverage should help soothe your throat and cold.
Exercise in a warm environment
Even when you’re feeling pretty crappy, that doesn’t mean that you should give up working out. It’s probably best to stay away from the super hardcore stuff until you’re feeling better, but a little bit of exercise during a cold shouldn’t be harmful. It’s obviously not a good idea to go for a run when it’s cold and snowy, that’ll just make your sickness worse! If it’s a little warm and clear on the ground, then I say a quick jog would be helpful. Yoga is also a perfect exercise that balance you physically and mentally while you’re sick. Do whatever works best for you!
No matter how sick you are, resting is ALWAYS an important remedy to get into. Your body needs to relax in order to gain more energy and get healthier. If you’re constantly trying to stay active with your cold, you’ll just make you’re more exhausted. It’s good for your body to take a break from your normal busy routine when necessary. Plus, you’ll find yourself in a much better mood later on. So listen to your body, it will most likely need more rest rather than more occupying work!
